Blue Bird Specs:

Specification Value
Type Walk‑behind core aerator
Aeration Width ~19–21 inches
Core Depth Up to 3 inches
Tine Type Hollow coring tines
Engine Gas-powered (varies by year)
Weight ~240–260 lbs
Productivity ~20,000 sq ft/hr
  • Operate only on grass surfaces
  • Keep hands and feet clear of tines
  • Do not operate on steep slopes
  • Check fuel and oil before use
  • Allow engine to warm up before engaging tines
  • Wear closed‑toe shoes and eye protection
  • Water the lawn: Ensure the soil is moist (but not muddy) by watering it 1 to 2 days before aerating. This helps the tines plunge deep into the soil.
  • Clear the area: Walk the yard and pick up rocks, sticks, toys, or hoses. Clearly mark any invisible obstacles like sprinkler heads, shallow irrigation pipes, or invisible dog fences so you can drive around them. [1, 2, 3, 4]
2. Starting the Machine (Gas-Powered Models)
  • Check fluids: Verify that the engine has the proper oil level and is filled with fresh gas.
  • Engage the fuel & choke: Turn the fuel valve to the “ON” position. Push the choke lever to the “ON” (or closed) position.
  • Set the throttle: Move the throttle lever to the midway point.
  • Start the engine: Firmly pull the recoil starter cord. Once the engine is running, push the choke lever back to the “OFF” (or open) position and adjust the throttle to a comfortable walking speed. [1, 2, 3]
3. Aerating the Lawn
  • Create a border: Drive the machine around the outer perimeter of the yard for one or two passes.
  • Drop the tines: Lower the tines into the ground using the engagement lever (typically a bail or lever near the handles).
  • Make straight passes: Walk up and down in straight, overlapping rows, much like mowing the lawn.
  • Turning: When you reach the end of a row, push down on the handle to lift the tines off the ground, pivot the machine on its rear wheels, and line up for your next pass. [1, 2, 3, 4]
4. Cleanup
  • Leave the plugs: Leave the soil cores on the lawn; they will break down naturally in a few weeks and add nutrients back to the turf.
  • Fertilize/Overseed: Immediately after aerating is the best time to apply fertilizer, grass seed, or compost, as these materials will fall directly into the new holes. [1]
